Little bits

Odds & Ends I guess. I am horribly behind on life right now. Spent all day yesterday in San Mateo at the Maker Faire. As it turns out, our project won the Editor’s Choice blue ribbon. Exciting stuff. Here’s some other crap that’s been on my mind:

* The Earthquakes offense. At this point, I don’t understand what the problem is. I’m totally open to people’s thoughts. User Robb has some great line-up arguments. Is Glinton the key? Somehow, I think the problem is more than just one guy. And here’s something that nags at me – this comment from Jay Hernandez:

Every team, every club, every coach has its own style. My previous coaches were Preki and Bob Bradley, who were very structured and we did the same thing each day of the week, really getting into a routine of things. Here, we make adjustments as we go depending on the team we face or how the guys are feeling. We make it a point to make adjustments in training based on whatever the team needs, and that’s something I’ve noticed to be a difference.

Especially after watching that creepy keep away warm up game right before the real game… for a team just starting to come together, with moments of collective brilliance, would perhaps more structured and routine trainings be the key? Hey – I’m no coach so to all you coaches out there, please feel free to tell me I’m wrong.

* Tiffany May to appear in Playboy. The streaker from the USA v Honduras Olympic qualifiers game. Here’s my first reaction to that piece of news:

And from now on, you will never read anything on this blog remotely suggesting there will be a streak at Buck Shaw. Tiffany, you’ve ruined it for the rest of us.

* Eric Wynalda is playing again for the Bakersfield Brigade. A few of us have already made plans to attend some, if not all, of the SF Seals home games. Now I’m especially giddy with the prospect of watching Waldo do his thing. Will I pull together enough guts to taunt him during the game? I hope so. July 17th @7pm, University of San Francisco. So excited.

I’m not sure what needs to put the ball in the net. I’m still of the impression that time is all that is needed at this point.

…but I DO KNOW that I will be just like this guy when we score our first goal at home!

Time, patience, and this motto: “There’s always room for pie” (or cereal, if you’ve been over to Dave’s Red Bulls blog lately) should get us through this hump.

That video was AH-MAZING. Imagine all 10,000+ in attendance going apesh*t when we score out first goal at home. Let’s make it happen boys.

I am truly lame. The majority of my life was spent living in the south central valley and never once had I realized there was such a thing as a Bakersfield Brigade, neither would I have guessed they played soccer and didn’t extinguish fires.

Apparently I’m really slow to catch on to things. It took me two minutes to realize that was Gob in the back of that picture, two more minutes to realize it was Bob Loblaw jumping over an object that took me two more minutes to realize it was a shark that took me about five more minutes to realize he was re-enacting his original jumping-shark-happy-days moment.

I shall announce once again: I am truly, truly lame.

I will also say that I’m wondering if Yallop is being too soft on the boys… in some interviews he just seems too damn relaxed and casual and “well we’ll just wait and see” and “I don’t want my players to feel anxious” and yadayadayada. Who will bring out the fire and when, because I as a fan am bloody well anxious!

I believe that’s just his style. It’s gotten results in the past. Don’t freak out and go all Alexi Lalas on us yet. Also, I’d say about half his staff is maybe brand new? The boys need to gel both on and off the field. I recommend 10 hour drinking binges or maybe just a camping trip?

Frank Yallop has earned my trust. He is an awesome coach with great judgment…both in terms of player personnel and tactical awareness. Offhand, I would rather have a coach who can make adjustments than someone who holds the same routine day after day…of course, it’s hard to argue with BB’s success with the US nats.

In any case, we need a scorer…Kamara and Glinton are not quality by any stretch of the imagination. Maybe they were the best available, but they just aren’t goalscorers. We need a proven goal-scorer. That will solve many many problems.

I certainly have no idea what I’m talking about but I guess with a new squad and a new-ish coaching staff and a new, uh, practically everything, maybe more structure in training is what we need to calm the nerves a bit. Go with what you know and all that, build trust through familiarity, etc etc etc. Anyways, that Jean-Phillipe whatshisname is our proven goal scorer. Historically, he was a goal scoring machine.
