New pre-season game added

By: Melissa | February 21st, 2008

Portland, look out! Thanks to Lucas for the heads up. The Earthquakes are playing The Portland Timbers Friday, March 28th at 5 and 7:30pm (no rest for the…) at the University of Portland. Tickets go onsale March 3rd and are available to purchase here.

EDIT: Whoops. The 5pm game is against the Timbers and 7:30pm game is against the Pilots. Are the Pilots the University team? Perhaps we are looking at a regular game followed by a reserves-type match?

I believe your understanding is correct Melissa: it will be the Quakes reserves playing the Pilots (who are yes, the University of Portland Pilots - the women’s team is great and have won a couple titles; the men’s team, not so much), followed by the first team vs the MIGHTY PORTLAND TIMBERS ;)

Last time the Quakes were here was for a US Open Cup match in 2004 or 5, and we were HOSED by a daft red card/PK 10 minutes in on our then defensive stalwart and now coach Gavin Wilkinson. We lost 2-0 and I remember Donovan having good things to say about the Timbers Army after the match (something like, “Not many teams in the US have fans that would be screaming and cheering for 80 minutes down a man,” etc.).

So the next time Donovan came (w/Galaxy pre-season 2005), we showed our gratitude with this sign. I do believe he gave us a smile and a clap when he saw it.

And we hate preston b*rpo waaaaaay more than Donovan (I actually like Landycakes), so expect plenty of angry and delectable hatred pouring forth from the terraces at UP when dick-nose is in goal (no banners, though, UP is a small Catholic school and they kind of barely tolerate the Timbers Army when we show up there).

Oh I am so excited for this…

    He’s bald,
    he’s shit,
his nose looks like a dick,
    Preston Burpo!*

Which reminds me of the Brian Hall chant.

Which, yes, reminds me of that U.S. Open Cup game and that complete wanker of a referee. Hall is to competent refereeing what repeated projectile vomiting is to good times.

    * The parents of San Jose need to lock up their children asap. Just a friendly public service reminder.

I’ve read on the Chivas boards he’s kind of an ass.

The cool thing is - by the time we play Portland, we’ll have our real roster so no more of this constant subbing/guessing who the new guy is. Also, we may have an offense by then (crosses fingers).

Should be a great venue and a great opportunity to welcome the Quakes back to Portland as only we know how.

Either way he was a great keeper.

@Alex: No argument here. Some of the finest saves I have ever witnessed in person were by burpo, the scum. He also threw the ball into the crowd once or twice, savagely attacked a ball boy, and I’m pretty sure he was connected to the Kennedy assassination too.

So far, I’ve only reserved that kind of hate for Bobby Boswell but thank god a new season is about to begin meaning there will be more potential incidents to fuel whatever rage.
