No more Victory?
By: Melissa | November 27th, 2007While the rest of us went absolutely gaga over that Bay Area MLS team finally getting players, our local USL 1 team that tried, The California Victory, quietly folded. The original owners, Spanish soccer club Deportivo Alaves, recently switched ownership and the new bosses decided they didn’t want to keep the USA team. Apparently, no new potential owners offered to buy the team.
What happened to the plan to make the Victory a fan owned club by turning it into a non-profit and selling $100 shares to fans? I was seriously ready to give those guys my money. Now next year, I no longer have the opportunity to grab a slice of pizza off Haight St, drunkenly wander through Golden Gate Park, and dodge oddball transient homeless people on my way to Kezar Stadium. I feel like a little bit of San Francisco tradition just died.

Deportivo Alaves is free of Piterman? I’m sorry about the California Victory but I’m glad to see the Basque team get a new hope.

I’m sorry about the Victory leaving too. We (Timbers supporters) had a great time trekking to San Fran last summer, and with the sounders only playing one more year in USL, this severely limits our road trip options.
The 1906 Supporters are cool people and deserve a team.

I’m not sure if there’s a direct connection but there’s a 1906 supporters club for the Quakes. Did all the Victory 1906-ers move over to the MLS side? I always thought the USL and MLS teams could co-exist in the Bay Area. I”m really bummed about this.
