Progressing Towards a New Stadium

Yesterday, March 3, the Earthquakes began the 12 week process of demolishing the old FMC building near the San Jose Norman Y. Mineta Airport that will become the site of the future stadium. To commemorate the occasion there was a little ceremony with members of the organization and city taking part. While the event was a success and enjoyable, there was a moment of unease when councilman Liccardo mentioned Donovan’s name. The group of Ultras that attended the ceremony booed him for the comment. But other than that it was a smooth event.

Here is a video with several key personnel discussing the project.

The highlight of the event was when the 5 Quakes players who attended – Ramiro Corrales, Chris Wondolowski, Ike Opara, Joey Gjertsen and Sam Cronin – showed up in an M2 Bradley tank. The Bradleys were previously constructed at the FMC building.

After the big claw machine thing tore out the first few bites of the building, they let Wondo up in that bad boy to give it a go.

So by the end of May the entire lot should be clear of buildings, maybe even the asphalt ground too. Then we’ll see what comes next in the plans.

Quakes play Colorado tonight in San Luis Obispo. There will be a radio stream of the match and it will go live on the main site 15 minutes prior to the start of the match. Match time is set for 7 pm.

GO QUAKES!
