Whats up Shea?
By: Melissa | January 18th, 2008
Welcome to the Bay Robert O’Shea. I’m not entirely sure you’ll be sticking around, but for now, I hope everything works out and you get to play for the Quakes. Lessie… the SSV blog says the word from our front office is: “this is the guy we wanted - we weren’t sure he was going to be available this late.” Well, thats a good sign already! Congrats. His profile page at the Furman website says he’s a forward but it looks like he spent his time during the Combine at right mid. For more info on this guy, start here. It does look like the general consensus is he’s super fast but not extremely technical.
And that was the draft as far as we were concerned! At some point during the first round pickings, I asked the SSV blog to list the ingredients of the Double D’s Earthquakes burger. Thanks to Jay for responding so quickly!
The Earthquakes burger is hamburger mixed with Dijon mustard, Lea & Perrins, red onions, salt and pepper before it is cooked. Served on a seedless bun with lettuce and tomato, along with sweet potato fries.
Are we a full-service news source or what?
Damn, that sounds delicious. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it.
Ok, moving on - rumors over who the next player on our roster will be are heating up again. I’ll just throw out the links here: Sasha Victorine, Landon Donovan (that Merc article comes to the same conclusions I did in a previous post here), Ramiro Corrales, and *cough* Carlos Pavon.
As for stocking up on pre-season games, it looks like we’re planning on getting in as many as we can before April. At this rate, we may actually play every MLS team at least once before the season starts. Yesterday Goff reported we are scheduling a February match against DC United in San Luis Obispo and today Soccer America reports we’ll play Houston (I think somewhere around here) right before that Pan Pacific Games tournament thingy. Ooh – that Houston game is gonna be a good one for sure. Here’s to hoping some of our favorite Houston players just straight defect and don’t get on that plane to Hawaii.
So I think thats about it for now. Of course, with my luck, as soon as I hit publish on this thing, Shea will get traded away or someone new will sign with the Quakes. Everyone should, of course, have a great weekend and if you are putzing around in the San Francisco Bay tomorrow and want to watch the USA v Sweden friendly with other fans (Sweden supporters can come too), there will be a smallish group convening at The Mad Dog & The Fog starting after 5pm.

The unpredictability of this draft just goes to show that Yallop and Doyle continue to make smart and responsible moves to make the Quakes a good team this year. Did you hear Landon interviewed during the draft? He didn’t sound like a guy thrilled to get back to LA.

Melissa,
My friend what are you talking about with Salinas? Why would he not be sticking around? This guy is right out of college, an All-American, and his wildest dream just came true. I’m sure he’s drooling at the chance to play anywhere. As the Earthquakes first pick I’m sure the kid can play and the coaching staff will be looking to him to immediately contribute. Best of luck Shea I’m sure you’ll do just fineGo Earthquakes!

I didn’t watch the draft (unfortunately… or maybe not) but instead kept tabs with Laurie’s liveblogging on the main page so I missed Landon’s and TheFrank’s speeches.
As for Salinas, my comments have more to do with the fact that Doyle & Yallop said from the start they may trade away all their draft picks for veterans and that Yallop wants to build a team with experience. After hearing what the Front Office has to say and reading more about this guy, it looks like he’s probably a keeper for our team and not just trade bait. Soooo welcome Salinas!

Count me in for the US game at Mad Dog. You won’t be able to miss a 6′4″ guy with a red hoodie, US jersey, and a big fro. I’d be glad to meet some Quakes supporters today!
