Benny, quit being an ass and take a pay cut
By: Melissa | February 21st, 2008Or rather, to Benny’s agent: quit being an ass. The poker face tactic may backfire on your client and I’ll be very very angry. I’m already very very angry today, but for personal reasons that have nothing to do with soccer. So lets not aggravate it any further.
Benny isn’t worth DP money in this league. Luis Bueno says it on The Sideline Views blog and Jonah Freedman says it on his Fan Nation blog. Both of these writers are a lot smarter than me and I agree wholeheartedly with their arguments.
And I really really want Benny to play for San Jose. In fact, we need him in our midfield about as much as Benny needs regular playing time and a supportive coaching staff to rejuvenate his career (i.e. Feilhaber should be checking sf bay craigslist rental listings yesterday). And its obvious SanHo Management are making very strategic roster decisions so they are NOT going to take a $400,000 chance on a guy who maybe played 20 minutes for his current club (I don’t care if its technically in the Premiere League and I doubt the Yallop/Doyle/Russell triumvirate do as well). And Chivas already have a sharp midfield that should only get – err - sharper so there’s no chance the Goats are going to pony up that kind of cash either.
Ok, so is it settled then? Should I go ahead and put in an order for my Feilhaber SanHo jersey now?
Speaking of the Sideline Views, have you guys been checking out their pre-season unit rankings? I think Bueno is spot on with these. SanHo places pretty well on defense and especially well in the goalkeeper rankings (I thought both Burpo and Cannon looked very good on Saturday), but we’re dead last on both midfielders and forwards. Granted, Bueno hasn’t had a chance to see any of our new trialists (but technically Freedman has – and I’d love to read his thoughts on the subject). But it is true, our offense is weak and we’re not going to be able to coast into the playoffs on 0-0 games. So I don’t really know where to go from here. I thought I saw glimmers of hope in a few of the guys on Saturday and I think we should all cross our fingers we can snag an underappreciated MLS veteran (or two) who gets waived or traded from another team. Other than that, its sit back and be patient time. And March 3rd is the cut off? Ok, thats only a little over a week away.

I cant see Benny comin this side of the Atlantic until all his options are stomped and destroyed. And when he does, he will demand close to DP money. Wishful Thinking. And for an expansion side, even less.
Sorry Mel. I just think that if he decides to come back stateside, he will want his value to continue to be high, and doing that can only happen on a well supported, and winning, team.
TFC anyone?
Lots o Love Melly!!!!!

What’s he got left? He turned down the offer from that team in Israel. Apparently they came to terms financially but after he visited, he said “no.” His only other option right now is to hope he gets more time when Derby go down (or the Swiss league… right?).
Yeah, a lot of this is my Wishful Thinking (hence the category) but I do think his agent is asking for too much from MLS. $200,000 maybe for a consistent and still young Nats player? He’s still never played in MLS so coaches have to anticipate an adjustment period. Actually, San Jose may be balking on that possibility alone.

It is crazy to me that one tournament can make these players international golden boys.
I would ASSUME Benny’s really good, but I’m not willing to make that judgment on one tournament. Since then, he’s played almost none in Derby, and looked like crap because of it against Mexico. If you gave him DP money, I would laugh, cause he in no way deserves it yet.

jon, I’m so with you on the DP argument. But Benny’s credentials with the Nats go all the way back to the U-something teams (forget which ones off the top of my head). He was on the international radar for a while which is the reason why he jumped straight from college to the Bundesliga.

And he was a flop in Germany…
just sayin, this guy’s head is a lot bigger than his resume.

Yeah, it wasn’t the greatest campaign and I’m not sure why he failed the way he did. I seem to recall he did make an impact in a few games in Hamburg. Either way, he’s still young and has a good chance to figure his sh*t out in MLS but not for DP pay. jon, you and I need to be calling his agent and having a word ifyouknowwhatimean.
