Notes from the Draft Party

The fine folks at Soccer Silicon Valley posted audio of the event so I was able to stay tucked in to my nice warm bed and pretend I was really there. Here are some quick notes on the party:

* Frank emphasized he wanted guys based on work-rate and specifically “young, hungry, affordable players”
* He went through the list one by one but didn’t really go into specifics on each player except to say that Cochrane, Hernandez, and Glinton actually wanted to come to SJ
* He did spend a little bit of extra time talking about Guerrero saying “he’s probably one of the best in-possession [players] in the league” and that he’s the “only natural wide player” of the group
* Vide has a “young Richard Mulrooney look to himself” - Interpret that however you like
* A trade (of one of the draft guys) is already in the works and a new player, not from a trade, will be acquired by Friday
* There will be a goalkeeper announced in the next few days
* Frank says Pat Onstad is not coming back
* There is no goalie coach yet because as Frank says: “we haven’t got a goalie”
* John Doyle says they are currently looking at some USL players
* John says The Galaxy did ask for San Jose’s DP slot and his comment if SJ will use their Designated Player option:

The DP slot gives us all hope as a club that if things are going well and if the right player comes up that we can use that and in speaking with John Fischer and Lew Wolff they are of the mindset that if the right player the right time comes up then we would be able to use that spot. We’re not going to trade it away we’re gonna keep it and we’re gonna hopefully, maybe not this year maybe not next year but maybe this year maybe next year, use that spot for the right player that Frank decides and club decides is valuable for us and fits in to our style of play.

Ok, I think thats all the new news for now. Back to bed.

EDIT: Oh I forgot to mention that Doyle said there may be one or two trades but he hopes to keep the majority of these expansion draft picks.
