You’ll Never Shaft Joe Cannon?

By: Ian | December 4th, 2008

Well, apparently Quakes management is.  Ok, I know I’m being a little harsh.  I can hear it already, “Business is business”, blah, blah, blah.  According to Center Line Soccer, The Joe is being offered a grand sum of $150,000, a large pay cut from his 2008 salary of $200+.  Now, the money isn’t the big issue to me.  The amount of money professional athletes make is definitely not my favorite part of the whole sports business, and $150K is a princely sum for anyone, especially in this economy.  But the fact that he was notified at the last minute, right before the MLS Cup, is what rubs me raw, and I’m sure Joe is feeling the same way.  Come on, this guy has gone out of his way to declare a love for San Jose and the Earthquakes over the years, and is THE face of the organization.  As such, he is an invaluable asset both on and off the field.  So would it have been that hard to give him a simple courtesy heads-up in advance that they would be declining his contract and opening up new negotiations?  It’s what anyone deserves, especially a character of the caliber of The Joe.  I thought the Quakes were supposed to not be like the money-grubbing, backstabbing, sell their own grandmas for a packet of Mentos type of club like our friends down South.  Let’s keep up our tradition of integrity guys, OK?

I’d have to think it would be a mistake to let him go. Your problem all season wasn’t with goalkeeping.

That’s just my point. It sucks as fans when you come face to face with the myths that have been created about your club and find them a bit lacking. Still love my team, always will, but it’s a reality check.

in MLS, 200K IS alot to pay for a keeper. But look at what happened to Becks and their boys when they lost their barking backline leader? Cannon is necessary to reinforce the Quakes backline. NECESSARY.
