Its on bitches!

By: Melissa | April 2nd, 2008

After I left that Quakes v UC Berkeley scrimmage a few weeks ago, I took Bart home. While waiting on the platform for my train, I saw a dude walk by wearing a Beckham LA Galaxy zip up jacket thingamabob. I was initially shocked because I seriously never thought anyone would actually buy something that lame (and expensive!) but after my shock subsided, I really just wanted to go up to the guy and give him a good shake and a slap. Lucky for him, my train showed up instead.

Don’t let the same situation happen to you. If you - typical average Earthquakes fan - find yourself face to face with a Beckhamaniac (Beckham-a-loonie?), I’ve put together this handy chart that outlines in great detail what you must do immediately in order to set this person straight.

Memorize it. Practice at home if you must. So when the inevitable encounter occurs, you will be ready to throw down (and rep the Bay).

So here’s my Quakes v Galaxy preview: We school their asses and they run off the pitch crying. Also, Bianca subs in as Beckham’s new target forward because Alan Gordon is gonna flip out and go back to the Portland Timbers (i.e. a real soccer club). Oh and Allison needs to put Kei Kamara in her fantasy team’s starting lineup asap because that dude is going to score on Thursday (and I hope I just threw out a double entendre for our young striker).

Well, there’s not much more to say on the topic, really. Except Ryan Cochrane has a few words, i.e. an excerpt from his recent interview over at American Soccer Reader:

Guys who haven’t really been here, who don’t know about the San Jose - L.A. rivalry, they’ll learn quickly, and we’ve been warning them about it. That, I don’t want to say hatred, but it kind of is, for L.A. has never gone away for me, even when I was in Houston. And I know those guys in Houston feel the same way about L.A. as they did when they were in San Jose. So it’s going to be fun, it’s going to be heated, it’s going to be a battle. Obviously they have a lot of attention on them with Beckham and with their new coach and all that. It’s kind of the David vs. Goliath thing right now and we love that role for us.

And our captain, Nick Garcia, had a little tv interview during halftime at a recent San Jose Sharks game.

Note at the end of the video, there’s a quick shot of Ryan with what the majority of Bigsoccer readers think is his girlfriend. Apparently, they also think she is a hottie. And now, after watching the video of the alleged girlfriend, I’m feeling pretty good about myself – not gonna lie folks. Yup, ego boost in full effect (and I agree, she is a looker, no doubt). Go Earthquakes.

It’s confirmed that the place in Oakland will be showing the game, right?

Keep this in mind, after Saturday’s performance it’s clear that we are the worst team in the league. If you guys tie or lose to us that means you guys are the worst team in the league.

There are two spots showing the game in the SF Bay, The Avenue in Oakland and Kezar Pub in SF. Fans will be at both so I totally understand if the drive to Oaktown is a bit far for you.

Shoot - now I gotta find a way to slip a pic in of me in here somehow…

you’ll be happy to know that i’ve shuffled my fantasy team around so that kei kamara is off the bench and on the field for tonight’s game. if he gets a red card and effs up the fantasy team points, i might cry.

I keep forgetting to add that Guerro and Glinton are still off with their national teams.

Also, I’m worried about the “probable” injuries of Corrales and Riley — specifically Corrales who really has been the leader in our midfield during the pre-season (and the combination with Grabavoy is like buttah). Now is the time for O’Brien to step up and take on that leadership role he’s been talking about. C’mon Ronnie! Do it for the fans.

Mel, are you going to slap me tonight when I’m wearing my LA Galaxy - Beckham Jersey?

I feel like I get immunity for 2 reasons. I’m from LA and was a galaxy fan before the Beckham showed up and 2, I’m a diehard Man United fan and loved Beckham for that reason alone.

I guess time will tell, but I’ll see you tonight!

Along with a bunch of Real Oakland FC players!

You get an out on the slap-fest mainy because you can name more than three players on their team (well, actually after their last “purge” I don’t even know if I can do that). That other dude at the bart stop… jury’s still out. Tonight is going to be so much fun I could puke.

I’m waiting to sing my Landon Donovan song when we have the home game.

Since we’re breaking all the rules of soccer with MLS, can we just go ahead and call this The Derby of California?

Tried to initiate some smack talk with one of my best friends–a long time LAG fan. Weird when we have little to point to, being a new team with only exhibition games under our belt. Funnier still to have a known quality like LAG suck so bad the last couple of seasons and especially last game. My main smack is “A random group of rec players can let less than 4 in against the Rapids reserves team, so I’m pretty sure Quakes will rock and rick-roll you tonight.”

HaHa - thats what I was saying to Elisa. Doesn’t a Derby technically mean the same city? And I think we’re all going to sing that song to Landycakes in Oakland.

Its the unknowns right now (for both sides) that make smack talking so much fun. You can pretty much just make crap up and it will still be a burn.

A derby does not have to be in the same city. Don’t Juve and AC Milan have the Derby of Italy or something pretentious like that? Man United and Liverpool is certainly a derby.

That said, the best derbies are within the same city. Regional derbies are next up — think Dortmund-Schalke in Germany. And given the size of the US, and the structure of MLS, I’d definitely call Galaxy-Quakes a derby.

Hell, RSL-Colorado has a derby based on nothing but a mountain range. That, my friends, is what you would call a stretch.

I was under the impression that a derby was between teams in the same city. Anything else is just a rivalry or a “classico”, but not a derby. Check out this link to the origins of the term “derby” Notice how they say Derby County has a regional rivalry with Nottingham Forest but clearly say that its not a true derby.

In other news. Colorado beating us (Galaxy) 4-0 on Saturday proved that the Galaxy are the worst team in the league. So after today’s defeat of San Jose, who can we logically conclude to be the worst team in the league…
