No news is…
By: Melissa | December 6th, 2007There aren’t hordes of paparazzi scouring the streets of San Jose nor does there seem to be a soccer specific section in the local Merc newspaper so I don’t have much news to report. This end-of-season to pre-draft stretch is turning out to be mind-numbingly dull and I’ve already finished my Christmas shopping. So now what? I guess its time to report on the new trade rumors. And for this week I give you: Pablo Mastroeni and Eddie Lewis. Discuss.
Over at mlsnet, there are two newish interviews with former teammates on how they’ll cope without Ryan Cochrane and Clarence Goodson. The articles don’t just focus on team camaraderie during this past season but there’s a bit of info tossed in as well; namely Pat Onstad’s comment, “…we knew with the expansion draft that one of us was going to leave. I expect maybe more will be leaving and coming during the offseason.” I’m aware he may just be referring to the usual winter transfers and trades but coming from a former San Jose player, its hard to ignore a connection.
In somewhat soccer-related news, The Spice Girls rolled through San Jose on Tuesday with Becks and children Becks in tow. My friend Emily went to the show and besides having a super fun awesome time, reports that the Humpty Dance is part of their encore. Is there video of that? Because I really want to see how they “spicefy” that hott Digital Underground jam.
I’ll most certainly be spending the coming weeks clawing and scraping for any new Quakes or just plain MLS news. I can’t guarantee I’ll be successful so watch this space to see if I find other entertaining non-MLS crap to write about. I think sf over at the offside rules put it best when he asked “what is a man to do to keep himself entertained during the long cold winter?” His solution so far is to put together a hilarious photo retrospective of Taylor Twellman’s life since the Rev’s MLS cup defeat. Check it out.

I have decided the MLS offseason is the worst in all American sports. The draft is exciting in NBA and NFL, MLB has these winter meetings….what do we have? Waiver draft (in which no one is picked)? Untelevised draft?
BOOO I say.

The college draft was televised for the first round last year, in January. It just means less than the NFL or NBA because very few people follow college soccer that closely (like the MLB and NHL drafts its kind of meh). We’re waiting for trades and overseas signings but it will be hard to beat last year with he Freddy trade and then the Becks supernova. Oh, and St Louis or Philly or neither 2009 will be announced eventually. But last year didn’t heat up til at least mid-dec.
