See ya Preston

By: Melissa | May 20th, 2008

There was a power outage at my job Saturday morning, and to make a long story short, all the systems crashed. So I spent most of that morning getting everything back up and running again. I managed to revive the company’s IT infrastructure and I still had enough time to go home, take a shower, and make it to my already scheduled Soccer Saturday plans on time. But boy was I exhausted. I would like to say it was the love of the game that kept me awake and alert well into the evening. But truthfully, it was nothing more than the combination of coffee and booze.

So today, I finally sat through my last post-crash “what do we do now?” meeting only to discover the Quakes traded Preston Burpo to Colorado for Kelly Gray and Jovan Kirovski. Initial thoughts? Well, I’m pretty exhausted so I feel mostly numb right now. As for the trade, it seems more like a stop gap than an enhancement. I think Jeff Carlisle (whose name I constantly misspell on this blog – not intentional by the way, merely dyslexia) outlined the situation rather well over at Center Line Soccer. In short…

* Kirovski fills in for injured Gavin Glinton, Peguero Jean Philippe, AND Kei Kamara who will be on international duty for Sierra Leone.

* Burpo fills in for Bouna Coundoul who will be on international duty with Senegal.

And we get Kelly Gray back… it just took a while but we get him back. And since our midfield completely disappeared these past two games, I really can’t say anything bad here. We’ve brought on another MLS veteran (who, uh, we passed on when he was a part of the waiver draft but that’s inconsequential and can I call a guy drafted in 2002 a veteran?) who has worked with Yallop and Doyle before. So if I was interviewing this guy to work with me, he would already have the advantage.

Will the new guys play against Houston on Thursday? No idea, but unless they are both in San Jose right now, I’d say no.

…and the entire US west coast just got a lot less horrible. Kudos to SJ for excising that turd.

Can you Timbers fans love us unconditionally now? We need all the support we can get. Also, if you see Nate Jaqua walking down the street up there, can you pass along my little idea to him?

I like this trade. Cannon is durable and I assume we have a somewhat useful backup keeper if necessary, but we need finishers and some midfield help. Kiro may have some more goals in him, and Gray is a capable midfield player. I am more concernced with Jean Phillipe(?) and Glinton. Glinton only looks good as a sub, otherwise he doesn’t try very hard. Jean Phillipe looks either slow, or simply can’t be bothered to play. So we have two guys playing similar games wasting a starting and a bench spot (can’t start them both).

Melissa, if we see Jaqua wandering out in Portland, we’re going to toss a burlap over his head and hold him hostage until he agrees to play for us. We need goals!

RK: I get the sense that Management didn’t want to trade Burpo but he suddenly became more valuable and, yes, the Quakes need midfield and forward help asap. I do hope we can still squeeze some good stuff out of Kirovski. Gray should be able to pick up what’s going on fairly quickly and jump right in because of his history w/ Yallop and Doyle. The Quakes other goalkeeper is Michael Gustavson and yes, I went and looked him up. Good luck Mikey and congratulations on your promotion!

Lucas: Can we have Jaqua on loan for a few games maybe?

I have to admit - I bought into this “Quakes will be competitive right away” business and their lack of depth and quality up front is starting to turn me a little sour. They must have a lead on someone and their just waiting for it to pan out….right? Right?

The reporting over at Center Line Soccer reveals:

    * There will be a steady stream of trialists in training until the transfer window opens, then Doyle will make a decision.

    * The Quakes have 10 discovery claims out, including one on that Huckerby guy, who hasn’t yet made a decision if he wants to go to Toronto or not.

My thoughts are: this trade tells me Doyle & Co are feeling the pressure too and they are finally ready to start dealing what they’ve got in order to beef up what they need. If we don’t see any performance changes, I expect to see more activity.

AHA! We just signed goalkeeper Dan Benton. He played in a few preseason games when Cannon and Burpo had some minor injuries. He’s also a local guy. Congrats Dan!
