We won our first game

By: Melissa | February 21st, 2008

On Wednesday, against Cal Poly. And our new trialist, Takayuki Suzuki, was the one who scored the goal. There’s a little write-up about it here.

A Yuri Morales shot was deflected by Mustangs’ goalkeeper Patrick McLain before Suzuki collected the ball a few yards in front of the net. Suzuki easily directed a shot over McLain, who was still on the ground, to record the first and only goal of the match.

Very cool. But before we start announcing this one’s for the history books, bigsoccer reader sikolec was at the game and gives a little more perspective:

I was at the game. The goal by Suzuki was simply a fluke on Cal Poly’s part. Cal Poly had just subbed in 6 fresh players (exhibition game) and a shot on goal was blocked but not caught by Cal Poly’s goalie. This led to an easy goal by Suzuki. San Jose (not all potential starters played for SJ, e.g. Joe Cannon, etc.) looked very winded and exhausted towards the end of the game with Suzuki subbing himself out due to exhaustion. However, Suzuki was very impressive (against Cal Poly, Div 1 soccer). Great game by Cal Poly playing against an MLS team.

So even by our roster-not-ready-for-primetime standards, this was pretty much a reserves match. But hey, a win is a win so congrats to Suzuki (and Morales)!

Soccer Spin has more info on Suzuki along with a few youtube clips here.

Something about that hair makes me want to sing, “Dancing with myself wa-oh.. dancing with myself…”

Remember when Donovan did that to his hair? Oh lordy that was a bad idea. I think Cannon and Bocanegra did it too. Glad that phase in MLS fashion died. If Suzuki joins MLS, he’s NOT ALLOWED to bring it back.
