Quakes/Gals Review
By: Sean | June 15th, 2008If you are looking to find a place to vent over a 3-0 loss to our rivals, you came to the wrong place. I thought the boys looked good, apart from finishing (more on that in a minute). To be fair, this was a much tougher game to analyze as I was in the Ultras as opposed to on my couch, but it really seemed like the number of chances and the possession was just about even. Of course I am disappointed with the final result, but this season is about building, and scoreline regardless, I thought the team looked okay. Now onto some highlights from tonights match:
Come onnnnnnnn summer transfer window. Papa needs a new pair of shoes legs that are healthy and attached to someone that has an affinity for putting soccer balls into goals.

I wish I could share your optimism. I was with someone who goes to maybe one match every three years, and it would have been nice if the home team had done well. But I saw the usual: Ronnie O’Brien put half a dozen crosses right where they belonged, but none of his teammates managed to create anything out of it all … Shea Salinas came on as a second-half sub, proved he was faster than anyone else, and also showed that at this point in his career, “fast” is the only thing on the plus side of his ledger … the “defense” let in three goals. Guerrero is probably my favorite player on this team, Garcia is a thug but he’s our thug, and both were missing. But the other side was missing Landon and Ruiz, so I’d say we made out as far as missing players goes. Ronnie O’Brien was practically the only Quake worth watching yesterday. I wish Doyle had run out at halftime and signed that lady who won the contest by scoring from the center circle … I bet she would have put a shot on goal in the second half.

We were totally rooting for that girl to win at halftime! And we are still unclear on what she won (an iphone?).
Analysis? I got nothing besides Go Slugs! Yay Adam Smarte! Sorry you got all hurty and had to come off. It looked like he was trying really really hard to stay in the game but was in loads of pain. I just kept thinking the poor kid. Its his first big break and he goes down. He must be devastated.
I’m with Steven tho. Ronnie O’Brien was it. Sad.

We’ve come to the wrong place to vent? I’d like to know what you thought looked good last night in a 3-0 loss to an undermanned Galaxy team.
I love the Quakes and I understand this is an expansion year, but as a season ticket holder I want to see progression – and I’m not seeing that. They aren’t able to turn in a solid effort in back to back weeks – they can stun a champion one week and then get killed by Real Salt Lake, beat Columbus on the road and then get embarrassed in front of 39,000 at home. Does this pattern mean they will play solid in Salt Lake on Wednesday? Their pattern says yes – the first two meetings say not a chance.

I guess I should have made clear that I was not going to piss and moan, but you all are more than happy to.
And I would have to disagree 100% that we have not seen progression from this team. As compared to the opening match of the season against the Galaxy, we looked much better last night. Another solid performance from Ronnie O, as well as inspiring play from Salinas and Smarte. I also thought Ramiro had one of his better games going forward, as his passing had rare flashes of vision (see: his through ball to Salinas in the 2nd half).
And as for the Galaxy being undermanned, they were missing three forwards. Fine. But I would have to say that we had the worse of the undermannedness. They include:
* Our top center back (and captain)
* Our first choice left midfielder
* Our first choice right back (out of position)
* Our second choice right back (suspension)
* One of our first choice strikers (and co-leading scorer)That is four different positions where we did not have our top choice in the game, as opposed to only striker for the Galaxy. Also, while on the topic of depth, as an expansion side, losing players will obviously hurt us more, because we have not had the time to develop quality depth. For example: they lose Donovan, Ruiz, and Gordon, and they can still play Edson Buddle. We lose Hernandez and Riley, and we have to play Adam Smarte.
As for the the inability to sustain a solid effort in back to back games, all I can say is this: WLWLLWLWLWLL. That is the record of the Colorado Rapids, the third place team in the Western Conference. Poo on them for not having a solid effort in back-to-back weeks.
Again, clearly I am disappointed with the final score, but to say that the team has shown no progression yet this season is incorrect.
