MLS = European Basketball?
By: Sean | July 25th, 2008The thought occurred to me just now while watching the US take apart Canada, and the commentators were talking about Josh Childress, formerly of Stanfurd, and other players “defecting” overseas to play ball. It was not about a matter of not being able to cut it in the NBA, but the offer was just enticing enough to get him to go to Greece. It looks like it may be becoming a trend, as other players such as the Warriors Andris Biedriņš mull over offers abroad.
With basketball abroad becoming of higher quality ever year, would it be far off to compare it to MLS? Granted, the MLS and European Basketball both have a long ways to go to truly compete man-to-man with the best in the world, both leagues are inching closer to the big boys. With foreign exports increasing in MLS, it may soon be time to start a YanksAbroad Basketball site.
Also, without getting too much into politics, and American nationalism and egocentrism, I think its a very interesting word choice to call the B-ballers “defectors”.
Thoughts?

My thoughts are, you should post this on the main MLS page. That page needs some love from bloggers LIKE YOU.

excellent comparison, and as soon as Beckham type bball player defects, we will really get a chance to look at it.

Where is Stanfurd? Idiot. Also european basketball has produced several top players ie. dirk, parker, petrovic, kirilenko etc. where as the MLS has beckham and several washed up neverwases like blanco, angel, galardo.

Geez Joe, did you read the article, are you making any sense. MLS has sent Adu, Altidore, Dempsey, and McBride across the pond and though they havent had Dirk type success each of these players are making headway in headinf over. Also Euro bball has been around a bit longer than MLS so lifespan wise MLS has a way to go.
If you are going to make comments, you probably want to do so with some intelligence and maybe pose an argument?

Joe: As an “idiot”, let me try to redefine my comparison. This is only being based on the IMPORT of players, not the EXPORT. I am not talking about the Dempseys, McBrides, and Altidores of the world, nor am I talking about Sabonis, Navarro, etc., though there are similarities.
I am talking about the players that are coming TO European Basketball and MLS, such as Childress and Brandon Jennings:

… and players like Tam McManus, Huckerby, etc.
As for the Stanfurd reference, any true Cal fan knows that there is only one way to spell that other school’s name. So either you are a Furd fan, or just informed. Let’s hope it was the latter.
