The Last will be First, and the First will be Last…

By: Ian | August 18th, 2008

…Well, not quite, but for at least one night it looked like the Quakes were the team on their way to being Cup champions, and the Revs looked like the expansion basement-dwellers.  I had to be a little late to a friend’s bachelor party in order to attend this game, which makes me a bit of a bastard, but I think my friends are starting to slowly understand the depth of my obsession.  For many years, I tried to keep it a secret, come up with some other excuses for missing or coming late to parties and events and hang-outs, but now its too hard to keep it a secret.  Especially when you show up to a swag Spanish restaurant with a Quakes scarf in your hand and a goofy smile on your face for no apparent reason.

But back to the game, and what a game it was.  It was so absolutely stunning and gratifying that it’s making me quote biblical scripture in the headline.  Last week’s 3-2 victory over the Galaxy is tops in terms of finally beating the Scum, helping to get Lalas fired, and setting the benchmark for a new era.  But this one was special for the fact that we looked like championship contenders for the first time, a team finally able to continue the winning legacy that was ripped away from us.  The 4th goal, O’brien’s second, seemed to be a matter of him saying to himself, “I feel like scoring another”, and making it happen, effortlessly bending it over the Revs keeper.  That’s the new Quakes era, anything is possible, let’s make it happen.

Player Ratings -

Cannon: A            He’s definitely back to his best

Denton: B             Solid, but not great

Garcia: A              Held the line against Revs onslaught in the 2nd half

Hernandez: A        Ditto.  Sorry, but Hernandez and Garcia is best center duo

Riley: A                A bit of redemption.  Made some key stops.

Huckerby: A          Played a part in almost all of the goals and attacks.

O’Brien: A            This is what its like when Ronnie and Huckerby are both on.

Corrales: C           Ok, but not the best I’ve seen him play.

Lima: C                Along with Corrales, didn’t hold the middle well enough.

Sealy: A               The target and set-up man we always wanted.

Alvarez: C            Not at his best, walked a little too much.

Subs

Johnson: A          Finally got a goal with his feet.  Monster off the bench

How could you give anyone a “C” after such a great game??

I’m not a Denton fan. He seems to make one large error a game that either costs a goal or puts Joe Cannon in a bad spot. I would prefer to see James Riley get the call at that spot when Cochrane is back.

    GO QUAKES!

Well, I did think about it before I gave those C’s. It was an awesome performance but there were some lazy passes that could’ve cost us the game at the beginning of the second half. Oh, and I use C’s as average, B’s as above average, A as outstanding. D would be below average and a bad performance.

Sean, indeed you went there. Commendable yet predictable. I give your comment a C.
