San Jose vs. DC United
By: Chris | July 29th, 2011
The Quakes host DC United at Buck Shaw stadium tomorrow night at 7:30 pm. The Quakes are on a 7 game winless streak and are coming off a disappointing thumping against Real Salt Lake. They currently sit 12th in the league table, two spots out of playoff contention. DC United are trying to make the playoffs as well, but are much closer to making it into the top 3 of the East than the Quakes are in the West.
The Quakes played a tough game against RSL last week and might have eked out a 0-0 draw if the referee had not ejected Bobby Burling and given Alvaro Saborio a penalty kick in the 63rd minute. Once that happened the Quakes’ back line was thrown into disarray as the club had no more true center backs and players were playing in unfamiliar positions. Thus the team conceded three more goals to lose 4-0. In the game before against Vancouver the Quakes finally found some of their missing offense as Chris Wondolowski scored 2 goals as they drew the Whitecaps 2-2.
DC has been playing decently in their recent matches, drawing 2-2 against Philadelphia and beating New York 1-0. However they also lost to New England 1-0. With Brandon McDonald providing some veteran poise on the back line, DC United is stronger than they were at the beginning of the season.
San Jose will be without Jason Hernandez, Nana Attakora, Bobby Burling, and Steven Lenhart for Saturday’s game. Hernandez and Attakora are out with injury, along with Ike Opara, who is still having foot problems. Burling is suspended from the RSL red card and Lenhart is dealing with issues related to his father’s death. DC United have listed Charlie Davies and Josh Wolff as probable but Davies did travel with the team to San Jose so he will probably feature at some point in the match.
The last victory the Quakes recorded was against DC United, 8 games ago. With the next 3 games at home, the Quakes have a good chance to pick up at least 7 of 9 points before they begin a road swing that lasts for 7 of their last 10 games. The Quakes need to start making a late season push towards the playoffs like they did last year, and what better way then to beat DC United at home tomorrow.
I’m leaving to go on vacation Sunday, so there will be little to no posts on this site until after the Colorado match in a couple weeks.
GO QUAKES!
