A very inspiring piece in the Merc

By: Melissa | January 23rd, 2008

I keep meaning to suggest to theoffside keepers we create a spot for a US women’s blog. And I’d even do the ground work (i.e. the writing part) to keep it moving and up to date and all that. After last summer’s World Cup fiasco, the unveiling of the new WPS league and our Nats landing a new coach then winning the Four Nations Tournament, there’s a lot going on right now in womens’ soccer-land. *Sigh* well, we shall see if I can muster more excitement and take the plunge (or just get really frustrated one day – which is basically why this Quakes blog came into existence). In the meantime, Patty Fischer, writing in the Merc, gives an update on the WPS, the collapse of the WUSA, and the possibility we’ll get a Bay Area team again. Unfortunately this is how she starts her piece:

My editor says no one is going to read this column. He doesn’t understand why I feel I need to be writing about women’s professional soccer.

This morning, the SSV blog put out a bit of a call to arms for folks to post comments on the Merc site to counter Fischer’s editor and if anyone reading this actually gives a crap, I encourage you to click on the link above, read the article, then add to the growing number of posts in their comments section.

My feeling is that if you (the Merc) decide to cover soccer, you, well, COVER soccer!
While I agree that few might read an article/column on womens soccer, that doesn’t mean you simply don’t write it if yo’ve already made the decision to cover the game anyways.
Besides, if you write articles about womens soccer, and the people who want to read about womens soccer KNOW they will be able to rely on your paper for articles, eventually people WILL make a point of coming to your paper.
