Pre-draft musings
By: Melissa | January 17th, 2008Firstoff, did anyone get a chance to go check out the vagina couch for sale on craigslist yesterday? The original cl post was removed, but thank goodness the Best Week Ever blog picked up on it (and included pictures!).
As for the Quakes, there have been a few articles this week discussing the Garcia trade. Namely, the Merc, while not outright declaring Yallop wasn’t pleased with this year’s draft offerings, does state:
Yallop said this year’s draft doesn’t have one great choice. “If you can get a good solid pro, you go with the known instead of the unknown,” the coach said.
So there’s really no larger deal in the works here. Our Gang just wasn’t particularly excited about the players at the Combine and instead of taking chances, figured acquiring Garcia was a better option to lock down the defense. And we’ve got one draft pick left – the first pick in the second round. Ives again, has his new and improved mock draft up which includes our lone pick and who we may try to grab.
So what does this mean? Well, I think Luis Bueno got it right when he took a stab at some analysis: “For San Jose, the trade is clear that Frank Yallop wants to win now.” The Quakes are carefully creating a strong team and smartly building from the back to the front. My question is, what do we have left to deal to acquire some ace strikers? All that remains is a lot of extra allocation money and one draft pick. Is that going to be enough to woo some goal scorers to the Bay? Are we going to have to trade more of our defense away? But trading anymore players seems an unlikely option since we were so quick to replace Goodson. I think Our Gang wants to keep the current roster intact.
In “players I’d like to see in a Quakes uniform” news, Nate Jaqua is looking into a possible move overseas (doh!) and Benny Feilhaber is maybe on his way to MLS. If the Feilhaber deal goes through, it will be interesting to see where he winds up. All I’m going to say about this right now is: we still have hella money and cap space to accommodate this guy! We can just stick him on the wing and let ‘er rip!
Ok, its almost time to get back to work so I’ll leave you with a short interview Joe Cannon did with the Merc a few days ago. If anyone is still worried his time with the Gals left him in need of a loooong vacation, its pretty obvious his move up north has totally rejuvenated him and he’s very excited to play for us again. Huzzah!

Great article in the Merc today supporting our theory of Landon D. coming back to the Bay…it makes perfect sense for both.

dwsharks: I totally read that article last night and felt less alone in my thoughts. She totally came up with the same conclusions you did a few days ago. Eerily odd.

Nate Jaqua was one the reasons I started to follow the LA Galaxy, and was completely annoyed when he was traded, especially since he’s the type of forward that would work well with Mr. Becks. He reminds me of a Terry Sheringham. So, if he does make a move oversees I’m all be sad, because it’ll be even harder to follow his success, but also I’ll be happy because he’ll be getting a much better experience and can only improve, eventually making some impact on the Men’s national team.
As for Feilhaber moving back to the MLS, that is just stupid. I know he’s not getting much playing time over at Derby, which is just remarkable. But if he could get some playing time on another European team, I think it’ll be better than coming back to the states. I’m sorry the league just isn’t good enough to help out Benny’s game. He’s one of the US’ great hopes for the 2010 world cup.
Let’s go Gauchos!

Oh hey dude.
Well, Feilhaber failed to crack whatever Bundesliga team he was on (forgot already - whoops) and then often enough failed to make the bench at Derby. That Derby situation confused me since that team is already in the toilet and we know he’s talented. I’ve no idea the reasons why he barely played but its obvious he needs playing time since he was a bit shaky during the South Africa friendly. I know he’s courting other offers (that Israel thing - but meh, that was dumb) but MLS is willing to pay Derby enough for the loan so I think he’s coming home for at least a year. I know he’s said in interviews he doesn’t want to get stuck here so hopefully that won’t happen but I really don’t know why he didn’t succeed overseas (unlike, say, Michael Bradley who’s out of control ballin’ and about to be takking offers like there’s no tomorrow).
As for Jaqua - I guess its all about forking over for that Setanta package. Grrr. He just really needs to get capped already. I have no idea why he’s not in our January training camp. There’s probably a legitimite reason too (maybe injuries or negotiations w/ overseas teams).
